My brother texted me this morning complaining that when he stopped in to my parents' house to walk their dog while the folks are out of town, it was "so cold" in there. He included a picture of their thermostat set to 70 degrees.
My brother likes to rant about things. He's a ranter. To paraphrase (and shorten) his rant:
"Dad's absolute dedication to energy savings has turned them into lizard people. This 70 degree setting is a lie. Dad probably hacked the thermostat to show a normal temperature so other people won't complain."
I told him I keep mine at 68-69 in the winter, and turn it down to 66 at night or when we leave the house, and sent him a picture of mine set to 66.
"Your thermostat is a simple reliable thermostat. His is like a whole tablet and probably has a 'screw with your visiting children' setting. Maybe I'm just the last remaining non-lizard person, kinda like Tom Cruise, except I'm not a samurai."
I sent him the picture above.

Wouldn't lizard people want the temperature to be warmer to prevent shutting down their metabolism, 'cause no internal heat regulation?

You have a very good point sir!
Maybe he is the lizard person for thinking 70 is so cold!

60 tops - but that is being a New Englander. Pellet stove gets it to 62 sometimes...

I think you're right that your dad hacked the thermostat. Like you, I keep mine at 68-69 in the day and turn lower at night. 70 would be too warm.

Just because he's paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get him.

Yeah here in Wisconsin it's the same thing, it's cold as shit outside so you try not to run the heat where it'll make a giant utility bill. We have a reasonably efficient furnace that doesn't drive up the gas bill too much. But that's why we top out at 68, which is totally fine. I've got on sweat pants and a tshirt and I'm perfectly comfy.
While I didn't grow up in WI, I'm very acclimated to the cold temps. My gf and I have compromised on bedding since I moved in. Her traditional winter setup was an electric mattress pad (with his-n-hers settings) flannel sheets, a woven blanket, and a comforter so heavy, I can't sleep on my back because it weighs down my feet too much. I got her to compromise with a medium-weight comforter, same blanket & mattress pad, and only a flannel fitted sheet with regular top sheet and pillow cases.
My mattress pad setting is always off.
BmanUltima's car still hasn't been fixed yet, he'll get on it tomorrow, honest.

I have an AMD graphics card, so in my residence room I keep the window open all the time otherwise it gets very hot. I'd say the average temperature is about 65 F or 18 C in my room.

This here Michigander sets his thermostat at 59 all winter because heat is for the weak. I'll turn it up when I have company over... and then turn it back down when I want them to leave.
Works like a charm.

Hey, lizard people are people, too!
(It's probably about 69/70 in my office with just the building heat, but I'm running a space heater. If I could get a human-sized version of those heating rocks for reptiles, I so would.)

The admins at my office have a space heater up at the front desk that they keep pointed directly at themselves. I'm a manager and occasionally I need to sit up their if one of them takes a break, and I have to point the heater away. It's insane.
We also have a space heater at home. My gf likes to get all bundled up in stuff. Our upstairs tv is in our guest room rather than our bedroom, so she'll go up in the guest room and watch tv with a million blankets and pillows, plus the space heater. Then she goes to bed before me and brings the heater into our bedroom, which I have to then turn off when I get in bed later.

My brother is the same way. I keep my setting at 62 except for 6:30-9pm when it's at 72 (on a timer). He acts like I'm trying to murder him via hypothermia. He actually brought a thermometer with him last time he visited because he swore that my thermostat was busted and when it was reading 62 it was really 50 degrees in the house (note, it was 61-63 the whole time).

Yeah, the guy I share my office with tends to turn on an electric fan when I have the space heater on.
The main reason I'm renewing my lease on my current apartment is because the utilities are included, and the fools gave me control over my own thermostat. At least my light AC usage in the summer balances it out a little, though.

See, for a person in a northern place like Wisconsin, my heat setting is downright balmy .

Since lizards are cold blooded wouldn't they want a warm room and not a cold room?

I do too... but when it's time for them to go, the house suddenly gets really cold. Women hate cold houses.
